The oil and gas sector has been in a very challenging situation since 2014:
significant over-production and reduction in global energy consumption
has led to a significant inventory build-up. Oil prices per barrel declined
from $115 to $50, with a low point of $30. Production in many mature or
“difficult” oilfields became unprofitable and unsustainable, resulting in
either delayed investment decisions, sell-offs or moth-balling that
continues to this day. The squeeze on profits has resulted in a focus on
cutting losses and Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), more efficient oil
usage, and higher margin products have all earnt increased focus. As
oilfields mature, there is a decline in oil production rates. In a typical
conventional oilfield, primary and secondary recovery methods extract 15-
35% of total available oil. Tertiary EOR methods may help extract a further
5-20%, enabling a potential recovery of 50-70% total available oil. To put
these figures into context, a 1% incremental increase in global production
equates to 88bn barrels, sufficient for 3 years global supply.
