The 12 Month Update

The 12 Month Update.

So 12 months ago, a bout of the flu turned into this.

Which in space of 2 hours turned into this.

Which the turned into a seven week stay in Harefield Hospital, Middlesex. 3 of those weeks in intensive care. It was Myocarditis and heart failure. One pacemaker later what I didn’t bank on was having to retire at such short notice. Nor was I banking on an extraordinarily long recovery. It did mean however that I cut out a 30-a-day smoking habit instantly. I haven’t smoked a cigarette since. I have to use oxygen and my arthritis and Menieres disease has got worse. I was also not expecting to have to take an 11 new different types of medication every day. Walking is now an issue and I am glad that I invested in a mobility scooter after struggling with and crashing a wheelchair.

I managed to offload a number of business interests and close down others, leaving me with just the basics of what has now become The Trade House and some legacy business interests in Ireland which I am hoping to sell soon as the lovely Brexit is not helping things and visits to Ireland are a pain.

Retirement was not working and I was so bored so I have built up The Trade House on a part time basis. Eat, Drink tea, watch telly, sleep and repeat did not work. The small group that is The Trade House now comprises The Trade Counter, The Trade Desk, My personal investments and The Trade House Magazine.  All from working no more than 25 hours a week. I keep getting calls asking me to take on business consultancy and brokerage projects but sadly I will not return to this. I will never go back to a 60 hour plus working week. The Trade House Magazine now gets over 10,000 unique readers every month. Something I am very proud of.

In October I left London to live in Warwickshire and I am pleased that I did. Hardly a day goes by now without news reaching me of news of another stabbing or of a friend or acquaintance being the victim of some other crime. This is actually quite depressing and to be honest London is helping itself with this surge in crime. It was a good time to leave and now I will not be returning. I do visit regularly and on this point I must proffer immense thanks to the traffic division of The Thames Valley Police for leaving me be whilst I speed back and forth. The new house is finally sorted which is a bonus.

One thing that has surprised me is how short the breakages list is, consisting only of a mobile phone, a car configuration website and a wheelchair.

There are too many people to list that I have to thank for their support in the past 12 months. So Thank You all.

So there have it, the 12 month update.

Update :: End September 2018.

September has been both exceptionally busy and successful. I am rather pleased that I have managed to avoid any hospital visits this month. I even manged to find a major piece of computer kit I forgot I had as I cleared and packed my house ready for a forthcoming relocation! How you lose a rack mount server in this day and age is anyone’s guess! This server will be going on eBay shortly. Its safe to say I got rid of a lot of junk!

I am also pleased to announce the return of my palate’s kindly reaction to real ale after a 7 month absence. I know that pubs everywhere will pleased by this and the positive effect this will have on their takings!

This is a bit of a longer update from me than is usual and is structured differently.

Nothing has been broken or crashed this month!

Relocation

The final “shift” in the long running and now overdue relocation will take place on 6th October. Thanks to many people who attended the leaving drinks party the other week. By popular demand I am holding another drinks party this Tuesday 2nd October 2018 in South West London. Please contact me if you wish to attend.

Temporary Office Closure

The office will be shut from 18:00 04/10/2018 until 08:00 10/10/2018 to allow for the relocation. I will be taking telephone calls and checking emails and our support channels regularly during this time so feel free to get in touch. This down to the relocation.

Trade House Update

I must start by thanking both the 6623 unique readers of September’s issue of The Trade House magazine and the 3101 unique readers who have already read the October issue. Thank You.

Advertising in the magazine is still FREE!

The Trade House now has a Slack support channel here.

The Trade Suite marks a genteel return to my personal investment activities and I have started its first fund, which looks to invest by the end of January 2019. I am receiving proposals in written form with accompanying documentation Now!. I will be holding 1-2-1 pitch sessions week commencing 05/11/2018 with site visits during the week 12/11/2018. Market Comment :: October 2018

Court Guinness resurrects an old column he used to write in which he takes an opinionated and sometimes irreverent view of what he sees in the market place.

In this issue he looks back on the month of September 2018.

Looking over and surveying my desk late in September 2018 I can safely say that this September has been very busy indeed. There has been an awful lot of activity and some of it negative, which is a shame.

Allow me to deal with the negative first. An awful lot of bad press has reached me regarding disappointed, dissatisfied and disgruntled franchisees across all sectors. Even more worrying seems to be the number of unhappy sectors specific to the food, beverage and hospitality sectors. The large number of enquiries and general emails I have received on this subject is alarming. I expect resale instructions to rise between now and the calendar year end. It has tt be said though that the health care franchising sectors do not cover themselves in glory either!

Another key theme appearing this month is finance. There are a great many people looking for deals, who  do not appear to have the cash! I am sorry boys and girls but “I will worry about the money later!” is not a sensible thing to do and lowers the tone of deal making. Always, always get your ducks in a row first before approaching anyone about doing deals.

Aside of this negativity this September has been a lovely month aside of the negativity above. Its lovely to see the property development guys being so active in the run up to the festive season, deals regularly being struck and plans made revitalise properties previously unusable. I note a great deal valour going into these projects too with some developers clearly unafraid to push the boundaries—in a good way!  I hope we see more this sense of adventure in years to come. It is actually a good thing for business as a whole and an excellent thing for the sector itself.

Once again it is time to talk about Brexit in this column. This is getting serious baby! We now have a limited amount of time left  before we in the UK  are out of the EU. This magazine has already had to make some changes because of Brexit! I am more concerned about the prospect of factory shutdowns and further disruption of the same ilk and the effect that this will have on our relevant sectors.

In short September has been a good month, roll on October!

I look forward to speaking with you all again next month!

Happy deal making !

Warmest regards

Court
